Desonide (Desowen) Pros and Cons

  • Desonide is a mild corticosteroid and is less likely to cause side effects than other topical corticosteroids that are stronger.
  • There are many formulations of desonide, including a cream, ointment, lotion, gel, and foam.
  • The gel and foam can be used to treat eczema in babies as young as 3 months of age and older. 
  • There is a lower-cost generic available.

  • Severe skin conditions may not respond to desonide and may need to be treated with other stronger topical corticosteroids.
  • Desonide is for short-term use only. Long-term use can cause skin problems like skin thinning and skin color changes. 
  • Desonide can cause irritation and dryness of the skin in the affected area.
